William Kung

As a highschool student, William Kung was in the right time to have the access and be one of the first generation of artists trained under the lessons of the american painter Robert Norman Ross, known more as Bob Ross, the star of The Joy of Painting.

Kung enrolled for architecture straight after, where he eventually was suggested by one of his instructors that he might find his path in the world of Fine Arts for his expressiveness in assignments. Not discouraged by the setback, Kung took the advice to heart and became an undergrad student of Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore. After he graduated with BFA, he expanded even further in the domain of visual arts through turning photography & videography into his profession, starting from wedding to spatial documentation, without neglecting his fine arts craft through commissioned paintings.

Not unlike how his early spiritual mentor Bob Ross who once said that “I am an impressionist by style and expressionist by nature*”, William Kung has myriad of craftsmanship and is able to conjure both and does so with distinct voice. Having been honed in diversified skillset of different field in his arsenal in either isolation or fusion through his merged technique. In the representational art school of thought, his voice ranges from realism, surrealism and texture painting, while his geometrics has showcased neo-plasticism (2D), cubism (3D) and dioramics (of diorama; model of a space normally in miniature). In 2024, William Kung returned to the Fine Art scene, all the while still running his photography venture and restaurant burnt.

*Impressionism captures the world around them traditionally in a positive light, and expressionists started revolving around inner turmoil and eventually human condition with fewer realistic approaches. The former visually transform the reality as to not simply represent reality but taking from it still. While the latter started off without to intention to.

Isolated Cities

100 x 100 cm - Acrylic on Canvas - 2024

Exhibited in Closed Alpha Testing

William Kung pushed the juxtaposition of his merged technique more than ever in Isolated Cities, The outcome a diorama with the crispness of geometric planes & silhouette brought out by the more realistic rendering & soft background gradation and vice versa.

The polygonal landscape presents the feeling of accessible man-made personal worlds, the sanctuaries above, under, behind the walls and around the corner of the everyday life separated only by so far yet so close margins in between.
