Sel Yoon-Suak

Korean-Indonesian artist, Sel Yoon—Suak (b. 1995, Manado), was originally an architect. She started painting out of curiosity in 2019, fueled by her desire to create chaotic, uncalculated lines and shapes; exactly the imperfection she’s been avoiding to make for years when studying and working as an architect. Painting, since then, has become a profound liberation, a medium through which she continually evolves as a self-taught artist. Each painting bears the vivid imprint of her boundless curiosity and thirst for experimentation, focusing on the dialogue between herself and the material used. Characterized by a monochromatic palette and spontaneous gestures, her work has been exhibited in National Museum of Indonesia (Jakarta), Yogyakarta, Bandung, Singapore, and more. She now lives and works in Tangerang.

This artwork emerged as an intimate introspection of Sel during a particular moment in her life, in her past. With an impromptu dance of emotions, she allowed the composition to guide the brush across the canvas, unravelling the painting's essence. The outcome is a mesmerizing field of monochromatic colour, each possessing its unique opacity, an evershifting landscape in every millimetre. Deliberately devoid of a title, the narrative of this piece is a blank canvas, an open invitation for you to weave your own tale. Within the hues, you are encouraged to perceive it as a mirror reflecting not only the artist but also a reflection of yourself.
